What formula does the pillar calculator use?
The pillar estimates resting energy with Mifflin–St Jeor, multiplies that result by the selected activity factor to estimate TDEE, and subtracts the energy equivalent of the selected weekly loss goal. The goal deficit is estimated as weekly pounds × 3,500 ÷ 7. Macro grams are then allocated within the resulting calorie estimate according to body weight, optional body-fat percentage, and the selected macro preference.
Why is 3,500 kilocalories per pound only an approximation?
The historical rule assumes weight change is dominated by adipose tissue with an estimated lipid fraction, but real change also includes water, glycogen, protein, and metabolically active tissue. As body weight changes, energy expenditure and the size of the effective deficit can also change, making long-term linear projections less reliable.
How does the Mifflin–St Jeor equation estimate resting energy?
The pillar and related BMR tools use the adult Mifflin–St Jeor equations: 10 × weight in kg + 6.25 × height in cm − 5 × age + 5 for the male equation term and the same calculation with −161 for the female term. This is a population prediction, not an individual metabolic measurement; the calculator does not use the Harris–Benedict equation.
